Novgorod

Novgorod is a beautiful old Russian city, located 155 km south of St. Petersburg. It was built on the banks of the Volkhov River, it was founded in 859 and is considered the cradle of Russian civilization. The Russians say that "Novgorod is the father, Kiev is the mother and Moscow, the heart of the people of Russia."

There is the oldest building in the country, built in 1044, is the famous Novgorod Kremlin in Novgorod. Formerly the Kremlin was the administrative, religious and public center. Right there they kept and wrote the first Russian books. Novgorod became almost the first center of the Rus Antigua where the population literacy began.
